Toyota celebrates 20 years of manufacturing in Wales

Today, Toyota Manufacturing UK celebrates the milestone of 20 years of manufacturing vehicle engines in Wales.
Since the start of engine production in 1992 the plant has produced over 3.7 million engines in total and was the first plant outside Japan to manufacture Toyota’s hybrid engine. The engine plant currently supplies to Toyota plants in Europe and across the world including Africa, Japan and South America. The state of the art manufacturing facility in North Wales currently produces 1.6ltr and 1.8ltr petrol engines and 1.8ltr hybrid engines.
Commenting on this important milestone, the First Minister for Wales, Rt. Hon Carwyn Jones said, “Toyota is a Welsh success story which we can all be proud of. For 20 years the company has been producing top class products, made here inWalesand exported around the world.
“The plant is now making engines used in the latest generation of cars and is the only plant outside of Japanto make Toyota’s hybrid engine. The company’s commitment to Deeside shows Wales has the workforce and infrastructure to support global manufacturers. Advanced manufacturing is a key part of the Welsh economy and a sector my government will continue to support.
“Toyota is a highly important to the north Wales economy and is proof that Wales is a viable and successful base for high-end manufacturers who can compete at a global level. I want to thank them for their investment and commitment to the area, even as we face tough economic times. Toyota has introduced new technology, new skills and new business for many local suppliers and long may this continue as we work together to secure a bright future.”
Richard Kenworthy, Engine Plant Director added, “This is an important milestone for Toyota UK’s Engine plant. It confirms Toyota’s long term commitment to the economy and providing employment in advanced manufacturing in Wales. We are proud be in Wales and would like to thank the Welsh and local government, our local communities and particularly our members and customers. Today is an opportunity for everyone involved with Toyota inWales to celebrate the achievements of the last twenty years and look forward to the new challenges and opportunities in the years to come.”
