Caterpillar welcomes the next generation of engineers

13 Jun 2012

Caterpillar will this week welcome more than 50 Year 9 & 10 students from local schools to its assembly plant at Desford, Leicestershire as part of the Government’s “See Inside Manufacturing” initiative. A day of activities will be held on 13 June aimed at dispelling some of the commonly held misconceptions about careers in manufacturing by allowing students to see how Caterpillar’s iconic yellow diggers are produced.

“Our aim is to allow students to gain first-hand experience of the wide range of careers that our industry has to offer” commented Simon Collins, Caterpillar’s HR Manager. “We frequently encounter a lack of appreciation of just how exciting an environment a modern manufacturing facility like ours can be. The ‘See Inside Manufacturing’ initiative allows us to build on our existing schools visits programme and join other UK manufacturers in showcasing the very best of British industry.”

The students will encounter a range of activities during their visit to Caterpillar including opportunities to undertake a simple assembly test and an understanding of the design process used by the Company. There will also be opportunities to meet some graduate trainees and apprentices who will provide insights into their careers with Caterpillar.
