A new carbon fibre composite system developed by Axon Automotive Ltd., was the JEC innovation award winner for Automotive this year in Paris. This highly innovative new automotive car frame uses internationally patented AxontexTM technology to manufacture very light weight composite structural beams with high strength and stiffness. During the JEC Europe 2012 Composites Show, Axon Automotive Ltd. exhibited their completed city car, which is a “B” size car with dimensions very close to a Citroen C1, but with a complete body frame weighing only 50kg.
The 21st century is a time of enormous innovation in the car industry. Light weight has great benefit for minimising fuel use and emissions, or to extend the range for alternatively fuelled vehicles.
To optimise vehicles for the use of new fuel systems, whole vehicle platform designs are desirable. Ways to achieve affordable platforms, quickly and with modest initial volumes that can be grown with demand, have great potential.
Against this background Axon Automotive Ltd. has developed a Body in Black carbon fibre composite system which weighs 50 kg for city car to 80 kg for medium saloon car. The benefit of this BiB system is that it provides all the stiffness and crash compliance yet allows external body panels of any desired material, from steel to thermoplastics and everything in between. A new carbon fibre composite resin system Crestapol 1250 LV was developed with Scott Bader ltd was used on the city car frame to give lower cost and greater toughness.
