Teachers and careers advisors from across the North of England are today visiting Nissan Sunderland Plant to find out about the wealth of job opportunities available to their students.
The special event is being held as part of the Government’s ‘See Inside Manufacturing’ initiative, which has been launched across the UK to encourage young people to take up Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.
During a morning of activities at Nissan Sunderland Plant, the visitors are seeing presentations on the different trainee schemes at NMUK for roles including production supervisors, maintenance technicians and administration assistants, are speaking to past and present trainees about their experiences at Nissan, and are touring the production line and offices. They are also fining out about plans for future production at Sunderland, which will include the new lithium-ion battery plant, the 100% electric Nissan LEAF, and the next version of the best-selling Nissan Qashqai.
Similar activities to promote manufacturing through teachers and careers advisers are taking place across the UK today, all of which have been co-ordinated by the joint industry/government Automotive Council.
In October, further co-ordinated events will see the companies involved invite school children and students for a look behind the scenes so they can see for themselves what a career in manufacturing and engineering can offer. This will include the two-week Nissan Schools’ Engineering Discovery Event where up to 2,500 children will visit Nissan Sunderland Plant.
There will also be a week-long event where the Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE) in Cranfield, Bedfordshire will open its doors to local students, teachers, parents and other educational stakeholders. This augments the Annual University Engineering Summit held in late February where 250 2nd-year university students share a taste of Nissan’s vehicle design and development expertise over a week-long event onsite at NTCE.
Kevin Fitzpatrick, Nissan Vice President for Manufacturing in the UK, welcomed the teachers and careers advisors to the plant today.
He said: “There has never been a better time to start a career in the automotive industry at Nissan. The opportunities at our company are many and varied, and not only do we have the next version of the Nissan Qashqai to look forward to, we are also gearing up to start manufacturing lithium-ion batteries and the 100% electric Nissan LEAF.”
UK Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “The See Inside Manufacturing programme is an important step in giving teachers and careers advisers the opportunity to see first hand the essential role that industry plays across the UK to help us achieve the sort of sustainable and balanced economic growth that the country needs.
“The Government is investing in more apprenticeships than ever before. Together with industry we must inspire more young people to see manufacturing and engineering as a viable and exciting career choice.
“We also need to ensure that UK manufacturing can take on its competitors head on and make the next decade one of the most dynamic and entrepreneurial periods in our history.”
