School pupils ‘See Inside Manufacturing’ at Vauxhall Motor’s Ellesmere Port

19 Dec 2011

As a significant employer in the North West, Vauxhall Motors Ellesmere Port was pleased to support the “See Inside Manufacturing” initiative – rolled out across the automotive industry in conjunction with the government – by opening its gates and welcoming over 260 local school pupils aged between 14-18 to the plant. As a result of the event which was run in four sessions spread over two days, the pupils started to perceive manufacturing in a different light and as many as 81% of those attending would now consider a career in manufacturing.

Val Thomas, Plant Personnel Manager, said: “To see the plant full of young pupils keen to begin their future careers was great. We always welcome the opportunity to invite young people into the plant and to showcase all the career paths that manufacturing can offer”.

The aim of the day was to give pupils the opportunity to come along and get a taste of life in the automotive industry and to gain information on what Vauxhall has to offer in terms of careers. This will then assist them in making smart educational decisions for the future.

Vauxhall Motors Ellesmere Port runs a successful Undergraduate Scheme, with increased numbers for 2011/2012. (The scheme recently achieved ‘Highly Commended’ at the National Council for Work Experience Award.)  The plant is in the process of recruiting school leavers for apprenticeships starting in September 2012 and, in addition, Junior Operator and Graduate Schemes are also open to young talent.

The “See Inside Manufacturing” event at Vauxhall Motors Ellesmere Port was organised by the 20 undergraduates currently undergoing a placement year at the plant: Pupils were given a factory tour of the General Assembly unit and had the opportunity to take part in a number of manufacturing-related games and activities such as the Beat-The-Robot challenge, Race-Your-Hand-built-K’Nex-Car, Hit-The-Griffin-On-the-Cross-Bar challenge, Super-Model-Safety-Gear and  See-Yourself-In-Thermal-Imaging, to name a few. Our enthusiastic undergraduates and apprentices were also on hand to offer pupils career advice including tips for their future application and recruitment processes.

John Merron, Body Shop Undergraduate said: “Our aim was to show Pupils the many different aspects of Vauxhall in a fun and interactive way. It was great to see the pupils enjoying themselves away from the classroom and we were really able to relate to them when offering guidance and support for their future career choices. The day was a great success, hugely satisfying and has definitely encouraged us to set up or get involved with similar projects in the future.”
