McLaren Racing engineer, Bernadette Collins, addresses delegates on the topic of promoting engineering to young people
McLaren Automotive and corporate partner, AkzoNobel, feature in a ‘best of British technology’ exhibition
Bernadette Collins, an engineer with the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 team, today highlighted the need to change outdated perceptions of the manufacturing industry and the importance of inspiring young people in a speech to Government Ministers and industry leaders.
Speaking in her capacity as a ’30-under-30’ ambassador for the ‘Make it in Great Britain’ campaign, Bernadette spoke at the Government’s Manufacturing Summit hosted by Business Secretary, Vince Cable, and Minister for State and Business, Michael Fallon. The summit brought together key influencers to discuss and debate what is required for manufacturing to generate significant growth.
Bernadette said: “My time at McLaren has completely changed my view of engineering. I’m reminded of attitudes towards diesel cars from a few years ago, and how they were seen as dirty, noisy and inefficient. Now, it is commonly accepted that they are clean, quiet and efficient. We need to go through the same process with manufacturing.
“Engineers at McLaren – and the UK’s many other high tech companies – work on some amazing projects which involve being creative, inventive and innovative to overcome design challenges, rather than assembling greasy machinery in a workshop. We don’t fit the old stereotypes, so it is important that we spread the message.”
The speaker programme was complimented by an exhibition showcasing the best of British technology. McLaren Automotive displayed its world-leading, high-tech credentials with a rolling chassis of the McLaren 12C – incorporating the ground-breaking carbon fibre MonoCell.
Speaking at the Manufacturing Summit, Dick Glover, Research Director of McLaren Automotive, said: “The technology on display today serves to demonstrate what can be achieved with the application of effort and intellect. The UK has always been able to draw on world class engineering talent to develop innovative solutions to global problems. The challenge we all face, and the purpose of today’s summit, is to harness that incredible talent to enable British engineering, technology and manufacturing to flourish.”
AkzoNobel, supplier of paints and coatings to Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and McLaren Automotive, was also represented at the exhibition and displayed some of the world class technology it has developed to enhance the performance of McLaren cars on the track and on the road.
