Hundreds of school pupils to See Inside MINI production

12 Oct 2011

Secondary schools across Swindon are being invited to bring pupils along to see inside MINI Plant Swindon.

Over a hundred of teenagers will have the chance to take a tour of the plant and meet apprentices.

Plant Swindon is taking part once again in the ‘See Inside Manufacturing’  initiative aimed at showcasing career opportunities within the UK automotive sector.

Dr Jürgen Hedrich, managing director of MINI Plant Oxford and Swindon, said: “These schools visits are part of our on-going co-operation with the local community. We always find that pupils are inspired and excited by a look at the production facilities and how MINIs are made.

“We hope to welcome more than 180 young people through the Swindon plant during See Inside Manufacturing and that many of our visitors will be encouraged to apply for an apprenticeship here.”

Youngsters will be shown the plant’s press shop and sub-assembly facilities as well as the plant’s Tool Room. Some of the plant’s current apprentices will also be on hand to talk about their experiences and why they chose to join the company’s scheme.

The training leads to an NVQ level three qualification and some apprentices will have the opportunity to progress right through to degree level.

There are currently 100 apprentices across the company’s production plants at Oxford, Swindon, Hams Hall, and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited in Goodwood. See Inside manufacturing events at MINI Plant Swindon will run between 10 and 21 October. Sessions will last around two and half hours and are open to school and sixth-form college pupils aged 14 or above.
