Jaguar Land Rover is proud to be supporting the world’s largest student motorsport event − Formula Student 2011 − which kicks off this Thursday (July 14th) at Silverstone. The event organised by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) is now in its 14th Year and will challenge graduates from around the globe to design, build, and eventually race single-seat racing cars around the legendary race circuit.

Formula Student aims to provide a new generation of engineers with the extraordinary opportunity to combine academic learning with practical experience to develop the essential skills that can be transferred in to industry.  Students will be awarded in a host of categories designed to test the limits of their skills, these include Sustainability, Cost Analysis and Best High Voltage Powertrain Implementation.

Commenting on the partnership, Jo Lopes, Head of Technical Excellence at Jaguar Land Rover said: “Formula Student is the largest global event to bring together Industry and the world’s best universities, some from as far afield as India, Russia and Australia. The concept of the event and the talent of the students involved provide automotive companies such as Jaguar Land Rover with an invaluable opportunity to engage with individuals who have the potential to drive the future of our industry.”

He continued: “Given the scale of Jaguar Land Rover’s investment in new products, attracting the best young talent is critical to our future success and I can think of no better place to do this than at Silverstone this week.”

As the highest ranking automotive manufacturer in the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers index, Jaguar Land Rover has a proven track record in developing the future generation of innovators, engineers, buyers and marketers needed to support its ambitious plans for growth and fuel expansion into new and emerging markets.  This year 330 graduates will begin their careers at the UK’s largest manufacturer of luxury vehicles, taking the total number of graduates employed in the last four years to 650. These graduates are joining the firm during one of the most exciting and challenging periods in the automotive industry as climate change, global consumer demands and economic volatility combine to challenge current ideologies and demand greater technological innovation.

Jaguar Land Rover is contributing to the Formula Student event in a number of ways including the provision of judges, vehicle displays and sponsorship of two awards − ‘Leading Edge’ Design and Quality Award and the, Advanced Manufacturing for Weight Reduction Award. Also showcased will be the Land Rover mini Terapod, a mobile off-road course which will be available for use by members of the public over the weekend.
