Aspiring young engineers to showcase innovative design solutions

11 Jul 2011

Aspiring young engineers from schools in Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Flintshire will demonstrate their innovative solutions to engineering challenges at a showcase event.

Pupils from John Port School, Etwall, Littleover Community School, Littleover, and Flint High School, Flintshire will reveal their engineering solutions to the management of Toyota’s Burnaston plant on Thursday 15 July at 11:00 am.

The event highlights Toyota’s continued support of the Young Engineers’ Club, a national programme which Toyota has been involved in since 2000 and is designed to encourage students’ interest in the engineering and technology sectors.

The day itself takes place following the recently launched government initiative “See Inside Manufacturing” when Toyota opened it’s doors to demonstrate the extensive range of exciting careers and apprenticeship opportunities within the UK automotive industry.

As part of the Young Engineers’ Club initiative, Toyota engineers visit three local schools every week during the school year to work alongside pupils and teachers on a variety of engineering challenges.

Throughout the year, pupils have been encouraged to research, plan, design, test and evaluate a range of solutions to challenges which have included: sound sensing robots, water recycling systems, motorised go karts and PIC controlled racing vehicles.

The event will provide pupils with the opportunity to demonstrate their new found engineering skills and confidence to Toyota’s management team, whilst allowing the company to recognise the student’s achievements.

Nick Freeman, Snr Manager, External Affairs, Toyota Manufacturing UK said:  “We are committed to supporting education within our local communities and promoting interest in engineering as a career. The Young Engineers’ Clubs allow us to work closely with local schools and I look forward to seeing the results of pupils’ efforts.”
