Despite the popular misconception that “Britain doesn’t make anything any more”, the UK remains in the top six of global manufacturing countries. And the automotive industry is a key element in the manufacturing sector.
The UK is home to seven volume car manufacturers and eight commercial vehicle makers.
The automotive sector currently employs over 737,000 people in the UK, in jobs ranging from design, development, manufacturing, retail, and service and repair.
Together with smaller manufacturers, suppliers and consultancies, the car industry in the UK generates around £50bn of turnover every year, £10bn of that being exports.
